Why Merely A Monarch?

Merely A Monarch is more than just a name, it’s a legacy of resilience, elegance, and the quiet power of proving people wrong. Our online store is home to a curated collection of printed art and now, thoughtfully selected home décor pieces designed to bring beauty and personality into your space.

The name Merely A Monarch holds deep personal significance. It honours Anneli Drummond-Hay (4 August 1937 – 31 July 2022), a trailblazing British eventer and show jumper, and her legendary horse Merely-a-Monarch. Against all odds and expert opinions, Anneli believed in her horse, and together they made history, winning the 1961 Burghley Horse Trials.

Anneli was more than a sporting icon; she was a mentor, trainer, and dear friend to our founder, Cindy Wattrus. Her fearless determination and unwavering belief in potential, no matter how underestimated, inspired Cindy to build a brand grounded in the same spirit.
